Doing America
Vancouver B.C.

C.B.C.'s Club Vancouver at
Vancouver, "the crown jewel of hours and Sundays too, but western Canada," is one of the most beautiful cities in the Americas! Although less than a hundred years old, it is by far the largest city in British Columbia...with a metropolitan population of nearly one and one quarter million inhabitants. Surrounded by mountains and seashore. Vancouver is a major world seaport...and Canada's gateway to
the Orient.
However you arrive, the first thing you will notice is how clean and green it is! Towering skyscrapers are complimented by beautiful homes and gardens. You may want to visit Gastown, named after "Gassy Jack" Deighton, who started it all by opening a tavern here back in
1867. Points of interest include Stanley Park, Lions Gate Bridge, Chinatown, Robsonstrasse, Aquarium, Planetarium, museums, Simon Fraser University, and the University of British Columbia. You can walk over the Capilano Suspension Bridge, ski on Grouse Mountain, ride the Royal Hudson excursion steam train, or go boating on Sea-bus Harbor tours and B.C. ferries..
339 W. Pender is scheduled to open on June 1st, but unfortunately I was there a week earlier. of the other six baths, the Richards St. Service Club at 1169 Richards gets some S & M, the Garden Baths at.1233 Hornby attracts some twinkies and hustlers while the Nu West Steam
Baths at 533 Front in New West-
minster is more for collegiate types. The latter had a tragic fire recently, but is being safely rebuilt Vancouvers' favorite gay book store is Passacaglia at 1230 Davie. For the many outdoor cruising areas, see the '81 Address Book.
The Central at 856 Seymour, which gets some humpy jocks, and Candy Dancer at 1222 Hamilton are the most popular gay discos. Foxy ladies prefer the Quadra, while Luv-A-Fair is a more mixed bag including some midnight cowboys. The Shaggy Horse at 818 Richards also has dancing but is primarily a levi and leather bar. Neighbors at 1337 Robson is a new country and western cruise bar that opened to S.R.O. Faces at Seymour and Robson is the only club open days, and they feature a Saturday afternoon Tea dance. These are all fully licensed premises, open except Sundays until 2:00 a.m. Most are semi-private, but American citizens should have no problems getting in.

Someplace Else and Yours & Mine are as close as you'll come to mixed restaurants in Vancouver, unless you include Denney's and MacDonalds...both of which can be quite outragious. For straight dining try The Cannery, Beach House, Kozmas Greek, Le Napoleon, Timbers, Umberto's and The Wharf. The Park Royal has great food if you have a veddy, veddy English 'mumsie' to wine and dine, while the Cloud 9 revolving restaurani on the 41st floor of the Sheraton Landmark offers a breathtaking view...but the food is for the birds. Stay at Bayshore Inn, Four Seasons, Hyatt Regency or one of several convenient downtown Holiday Inns. Although Vancouver's population is still largely English, a recent influx of Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian and Scandinavian ethnic groups is making for a more interesting multi-racial city. Some Canadians are not as forward as most Americans, so if you're visiting, and nothing is happening...take the bull by the horn, or whatever? After all, nothing ventured, nothing gained, and you could miss a lot!
Until just a few years ago, hotel pubs, which close at 12:00 midnight, were the only places where gay people could meet and toss down a few beers. Although an anachronism...several still survive. The Ambassador and King's Castle cater to a combination of : young hustlers and older men, who sit around sadly eyeing each other. (You can move your eyes.. but not your beer). The Vanport Hotel Pub is a gathering place for women. The Play Pen South, at 1369 Richards, is open after
